How to Get Rid of Wrinkles and Fine Lines
No one likes wrinkles because it means we are aging. But it’s just like the bills which we can’t get rid of. Should we just accept the reality and let it go? Then you’re making the same mistakes back in your 20s. Wrinkles start from around the age of 25, first fine lines then wrinkles. And it becomes more and more noticeable over time.
So how to get rid of the annoying wrinkles and fine lines? Let’s find it out together.
| What Causes Wrinkles?
- Aging
After 25, as we get older, the production levels of collagen and elastin which are responsible for your skin’s firmness and elasticity start to drop and existing collagen decreases. Our skin gradually loses its elasticity.
- Sun Exposure
Sun exposure is the main factor causing wrinkles and fine lines. UV rays promote the formation of free radicals within the skin and damages elastin fibers in the skin, causing wrinkles and even skin cancer.
- Smoking
Nicotine and other chemicals in cigarettes lead to a marked reduction in the production of new collagen. Decreased collagen results in the development of wrinkles. There was a study compared 28 current smokers and 24 non-smokers and the result showed the gross elasticity was significantly lower in smokers. That’s not the only damage cigarette do to you.
- Lack of Sleep
Lack of sleep contributes [to wrinkles] because the pH of the skin is altered by not sleeping enough and that skin cells’ ability to remain hydrated.
| How to Prevent Wrinkles?
- Wear Sunscreen
Sunscreen can protect you from the UV rays which caused wrinkles and skin cancer. It’s essential to apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 every day. If you want to know what kind of sunscreen you should buy, check it here “Anti-aging Starts with Sunscreen”
- Quit Smoking
Smoking greatly speeds up how quickly skin ages. It causes wrinkles and a dull, sallow complexion.
- Drink less Alcohol
Alcohol depletes our body of vitamin A, which plays an important role in keeping our skin firm and youthful.
- Keep Your Face Clean and Hydrated
Wash your face twice a day and after sweating heavily to keep it clean. Skin is the largest organ of our body. It’s like flowers which need plenty of water. Everyone knows what happens when a lake dries up. Moisturizer is also very important. It helps to nourish and hydrate the skin. This is especially important as you get older and your skin becomes drier, which makes it more prone to wrinkles.
- Eat a Healthy, Well-balanced Diet
A large Dutch study from 2019 that had more than 2,700 participants found that dietary habits are associated with facial wrinkling, especially in women. Foods that contain high levels of antioxidants can help reduce the wrinkles and fine lines, such as blueberries, beets, spinach, and artichoke.
| Wrinkle Treatments
- Retinoids
Retinoids help increase the production of collagen which is responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity. It’s the most widely used way to get rid of wrinkles and slow aging. But it comes with risks of redness and peeling.
- Fruit acids (AHAs)
AHAs dissolve the dead skin and stimulate the production of new skin. The outermost layer of your skin looks brighter and finer. This is one of my favorite ingredients because it improves skin texture, tone, fine lines, as well as acne.
- Botox
- Dermabrasion
- Plastic surgery
If you’re thinking about getting a cosmetic procedure done, consult experienced doctors. Tell them your goals and ask about risks, benefits, and costs.
